4 Zero Waste Gift Wrapping Techniques

The festive season is not only a time of love and joy; where many of us reunite with family and friends, but is also a time of abundance and is notorious for being the most wasteful time of the year!

Wrapping-paper is not
only paper, it is made out of hard-to-recycle mixed materials; glitters (aka micro plastics) that will go straight to landfill and take hundreds of years to break down. Imagine all the damage this material can do to our ecosystems just for a few minutes of suspense! Luckily, there are other wonderful and eco-friendly options to wrap your gifts, for all occasions, and 100% plastic free!

Tip: Pop your gifts in one of your many tote bags (*cough* Swag Carry Bag) to replace single use gift bags.

1. Newspapers/magazines

You probably have one or two gardening, travel and fashion magazines piled up in the corner of a room that haven't been opened in a while. Put them to good use and use them to wrap gifts!

2. Kraft paper

The good thing with kraft paper is it’s fully compostable! If the colour is too bland for you, pick some flowers and leaves and tie them with a compostable cord around your kraft paper for a more festive look.

3. Produce bags

The produce bags can not only be used to store your fruits and veg while grocery shopping but also to carry a gift for your loved ones! Simply tie a knot and add a colorful (fully compostable) ribbon and a beautiful pine tree branch and you’re all set.

4. Fabric

Also called “Furoshiki”, this wrapping technique has been practised in Japan for hundreds of years to wrap valuable goods. Not only beautiful, it is also one of the most eco-friendly and versatile ways to use fabric and scarves.
